The SEO Validity of the Blog: Keyword Optimization or Content Optimization?

We have had some questions lately from both customers and prospects regarding their blogs and what and how and who and why the best way to market them on the search engines might be. A lot of the questions have something to do with the concept that the blog is essentially a replica of the website, and so it should be marketed the same way on the search engines – or should it? And if so why or not??

Let's take a look at a couple of concepts and tips that can help clear these kinds of questions up….

The first thing that we need to figure out is what the purpose of the blog really is? For our purposes here, and for the types of clients we work with at Page One, the answer is generally going to be one of two: we want the blog to draw traffic to itself which will then turn into inquires (essentially a second website), OR the blog is a complement to the website, whereas we would like to write regular articles in a place where our website visitors can see them as an extension of our website- we then become an expert in our industry and really drive return visits and build trust in our market. The search engine component here will drive what we called "long tailed" traffic to the blog itself. By long tailed (and bear in mind, "long tailed" in a blog will not necessarily mean the same as "long tailed" when we're marketing, for instance, an online catalog of parts), we are talking about those searches that are 4 or more words in length, that will be a little more abstract as far as what the searcher is looking for, and that your regular website will probably not be ranking for.

So, now that we have our purposes nailed down, we can put them into two distinct methodologies from the SEO standpoint: the former is what we call keyword optimization (which you are familiar with if you run an SEO campaign on your website) and the second is what we call content optimization.

Let's first take a quick look at how each functions from the actual on page SEO standpoint.

As mentioned, the keyword optimization methodology will be very similar to the way your optimize your website. You will START with a list of defined keywords, and the KEYWORDS will dictate what you will be writing about. Typically, you will use the same meta data formats (title tags, descriptions, headers, etc) that you would on your website. The blog then, would ideally be giving you a second result for keywords that you site is already ranking for.

TIP: Rarely, and especially if your blog is new, are you going to be able to get it to rank as well as your established websites for the same keywords as a short term goal.

Now, the second methodology is what we refer to as content optimization of the blog. This is going to be a bit different to what the average Joe is used to when thinking about "SEO". In a content optimization campaign, we are letting the CONTENT itself dictate what the blog will show up for in the search engines. Why would we do that?? Well, if you are a company that has a lot to say about your products, such as their applications, their potential markets, the science behind them, who just bought one and what they are using it for- content optimization will be your choice. Using the concept of content optimization will free you from what I'd (sort of) jokingly refer to as "keyword prison". Using this concept, you are not writing to keywords, you are writing to your audience- your prospects and customers.

Now that we have at least a basic understanding of how these two concepts work, the next question really asks itself, doesn't it?

"Well, why can't I use BOTH of these?!?!" Guess what: YOU CAN AND YOU SHOULD!!

This point, however, is where most people will make some critical errors and hurt the blog as an overall marketing tool.

TIP: DO NOT use both of these methods in one single post.

I'm going to give you an example: let's say that you have written a content based post entitled "Surviving a Down Economy as an Online Business Owner". You have 500-1000 words that are geared toward your audience (in this case online business owners) and you have posted your piece. Now, your next move might be go to your All in One SEO plugin in WordPress and put in your title tags, right?

WRONG!!!!! In a content based post, the title of your article needs to be your title tag. You might say, yes but I want people to find my blog for the keyword "Online Business SEO" so Im going to put that as my title tag on my article. If this is how you approach your blogging, your blog is as good as invisible….

With that said, I am going to show you step by step the correct procedure for succeeding using the above as an example.

First, you need to have a plan or a road map. In most cases, this will be the combination of your keyword list and the list of topics that you ant to write about. Let's assume we have that. Now in our example, we know that our main KEYWORD target is going to be "Online Business SEO".

TIP: Just as with your website, you will want to use your homepage to target your two or three most important keywords.

So in our case, we are already targeting "online business SEO" with our blog homepage, and we am ranking in the top 30 results, building good links, and moving up in ranking. If we were to then use this keyword as a title tag on OTHER pages of our blog, we are risk for what is known as "keyword cannibalization". Basically, what this means is that Google will see two pages with same keyword in the title tag, and will become confused as to which page to rank. Unfortunately for us, Googlebot's answer is to rank neither highly, and thus we will end up losing the rank that we have worked to achieve with the homepage.

The answer here, then, is that "online business SEO" is off the table. Its already accounted for. Therefore, the absolute best method for this post is to use the content optimization methodology. Will this post drive as much traffic as the homepage that is optimized for "online business SEO"? Nope. But that's OK..its going to drive quality traffic you otherwise would not get.

Moving forward on our road map, we have the keyword "ecommerce seo" which we'd like to rank for. We can go ahead and write a nice post about and around this topic, still writing to our audience but remaining conscious of the keyword itself, and using it in the text. Now, we can post it, and use our SEO plugin to add it as the title tag, etc…and begin a link building campaign toward it. So now we have a great content based post which will send long tailed traffic and a great keyword based post which will send traffic targeted to that specific keyword.

TIP: Once you have your keyword optimized post, why not write a content based post to match it? In this case, you might title it "Best Practices When Optimizing Your Online Catalog"…
